At The Meat Club, we love our Atlantic Salmon. Thrown in with a salad, pasta or as a sandwich filler – the possibilities are endless! But did you know that salmon has some pretty amazing health benefits as well? We found a few reasons why salmon is definitely a hit, even for the health-conscious.
Salmon consumption may reduce inflammation, blood pressure and disease risks
Salmon is one of the best sources of Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. These Omega-3 fats are essential fats, which means that you can only obtain them from your diet. Studies have shown that EPA and DHA have many health benefits, namely:
- decreasing inflammation;
- lowering blood pressure;
- lowering cholesterol levels; and
- reducing the risk of cancer.
Salmon helps with weight control
Fortunately, not all great-tasting foods are fattening. Unlike other high-protein foods, salmon helps regulate hormones that control appetite. Your metabolic rate also increases after eating the protein-rich salmon. Salmon is also relatively low in calorie count. A 100g serving of farmed salmon has only 206 calories. In comparison, a Fillet-O-Fish burger from McDonalds has 390 calories.
Salmon may protect brain health
Studies suggest that consuming salmon may improve brain function. Fatty fish have been found to reduce depressive symptoms, protect foetal brain health during pregnancy and lower the risk of dementia.
Salmon is high in Vitamin B
Our bodies need Vitamin B for functions such as turning food into energy and reducing inflammation that can result in heart disease. By consuming a 100g serving of salmon, you will meet 7% of your recommended daily intake (RDI) of Folic acid (Vitamin B9) and 29% of the RDI of Riboflavin (Vitamin B2).
Salmon is delicious and versatile
If the health benefits mentioned above weren't enough to convince you, this final one should. Salmon has a unique and delicate flavour. It also has a less "fishy" taste than many other types of fish. You can cook it in many ways: smoked, grilled or baked – the choice is yours! If you are looking for some inspiration, check out some of our salmon recipes here.
The Meat Club's Atlantic Salmon
Our Atlantic salmon are ocean farmed in the waters of Tasmania, Australia. The unique mix of currents, water quality and temperatures elevates our Atlantic salmon above the rest. The salmon are ocean farmed in the most sustainable way possible, with some of the lowest stocking density in the world (99% water to 1% fish), meaning our fish have plenty of room to swim.
Our suppliers have achieved the world-leading Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification from The Global Aquaculture Alliance, an international and independent certification that recognises their substantial and ongoing efforts to maintain environmental integrity.
We aren't saying this just for the sake of it, but we truly believe that our Atlantic Salmon is one of the finest in the world. If you'd like to try some for yourself, you can do so here.
