Supermum Edition: Tanya Soman
Tell us a little bit about yourself. What is your line of work? Do you have any kids?
My name is Tanya Soman. I am an ex-hospitality designer turned chef-entrepreneur and the founder of Fusspot & Foodie, a party catering service business.
How has transiting to WFH been like for you during the COVID-19 circuit breaker? How have you juggled work and kids?
The CB has not impacted my usual work arrangement too much – like before I continue to work on admin, marketing and communications from home. Being an essential service, our kitchen has been open, albeit with slightly different operational hours due to reduced manpower restrictions.
Juggling HBL and work has NOT been easy, especially since I cannot work from home all the time. Fortunately, my husband, who is WFH helps us stay on top of things when it comes to supervising schoolwork when I’m at the kitchen.
What have been the challenges and rewards during this circuit breaker period for you the family?
On the home front – I’d say HBL and planning grocery shopping has been challenging. An upside is that we by default spend more time together as a family. We’re learning to appreciate the small joys and freedom that we took for granted earlier. We’ve also had a chance to catch up with family back in India over regular Zoom calls and video calls.
Although it’s been hard for business with our party catering services temporarily off – I do enjoy the fact that I can sleep in and enjoy a quiet cup of coffee on a Sunday morning – a luxury I haven’t had in years! 😊
What does Mother’s Day mean to you? How will you be celebrating Mother’s Day this year?
I’m my mum’s biggest fan and although she doesn’t make a big fuss about it – I love calling her and wishing her. We’re not big on grand gestures with presents in our family, but I do like to send mum flowers.
As for my daughter… She is MAD excited because Mother’s day and my birthday fall in the same week. She’s making top secret cards, and loves making me breakfast and of course there are loads of cuddles with promises to “never ever ever ever trouble me”
What can I say… maybe she gets it from her own mother! ☺️
We know you enjoy good food and cooking at home, do you have any kid friendly recipes you can share?
A good curry is a fantastic family friendly recipe! Spice levels can be easily adapted to suit younger kids. Here’s a recipe for our family fave – Lamb Rendang!
