“I was pregnant with our first daughter, and craving good, quality red meat,” shares Amy, who was a lawyer in Australia before moving to SG with her husband in 2013.
“I would either go to a butcher and pay a small fortune for a steak, or go to the local supermarket and wasn’t necessarily satisfied with the quality.” Amy did a little market research and established a business case for starting an online store. The Meat Club was born in 2014.
But, Amy is the first to admit, “A great idea is never enough. You need stamina and determination.” Using these attributes is how she has built The Meat Club’s loyal-and-growing e-subscribers, who receive fresh Australian meat and produce straight to their doorsteps each week.It’s pretty obvious The Meat Club helps people “live well in Singapore” – as The Finder aims to do – and Amy names two specific ways: “The first is efficiencies. I, myself, regularly forget to place an order for my groceries. So, I hope that it means people get a regular delivery without having to think about it,” says Amy, now a mum of two little girls, aged 3 and 1. “The second is making sure that people are eating product they trust – they know the source, they know the animal was treated well.”Today, her business is still entirely web-based and Amy employs only three full-time staff – hence, this “Small-but-Mighty Award” – but she’s got big dreams. “In five years’ time, I would like say that The Meat Club is an authority on meat in Singapore, including vegetarian options,” says Amy. “I also hope to be looking back with a fleet of our own trucks and our own warehouse.” What about in 10 years? “Can I come back on that one?” she says, with a hearty laugh.
